The recent gloomy months have been rough when it comes to motivation but now, we all have something to look forward to - spring is coming! The weather is warming, flowers are in bloom and the urge to get outside and get moving is starting to shine through!

Some might enjoy a long walk, a brisk hike or simply sitting outside in the sun. Others might be aiming for a more engaging physical activity and are asking themselves: cycling or running – which is the better spring sport for me?

One important question for those looking to get in shape this spring is which activity will offer me a better workout? Both running and cycling are great forms of cardio exercise that can improve your endurance, heart health, and overall fitness.

For those specifically interested in burning calories, running does generally burn more calories on average than cycling.

Although there is no definite answer because the number of calories burnt depends on factors, such as training intensity, terrain, and personal specs. As a general rule, because you are moving your whole body more and using more muscles while running, you will burn more calories within the same time compared to cycling.

As an example, at an average speed of ten kilometers per hour (which equals a pace of six minutes per kilometer), a male runner of 80 kilos will burn about 850 kilocalories an hour. The faster he runs, the more calories he burns.

 

CYCLING VS RUNNING: WHICH IS BETTER FOR MUSCLE GROWTH?

If muscle growth is specifically what you’re after cycling may be the way to go! Cycling predominantly works the muscles in your lower half, glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves. When you’re cycling these muscles are working together to power the pedals and propel you forward against a certain level of resistance, this push against the resistance is what causes the muscles to grow!

While running also engages many of the same muscles it does not engage them in the same way as cycling. Running will typically result in more toned muscles and stronger bones!

 

CYCLING VS RUNNING: WHICH IS MORE JOINT-FRIENDLY?

Despite the numerous health benefits that running has to offer some doctors may advise some exercise beginners or individuals suffering from arthritis to opt for cycling rather than running. There is a simple reason for that: the strain on the joints is much less on a bicycle.

Running can be very hard on the joints. Because running is a high-impact activity, there is a lot of stress and trauma caused to the muscles and joints that can be hard for the body to handle. When cycling, more than half of the body’s weight is carried by the saddle, which makes cycling one of the most joint-friendly sports available. You can improve your cardio and strengthen muscles while cycling, all the while reducing the level of stress on the body!

CYCLING OR RUNNING? WHY NOT BOTH!

Running and cycling are both fantastic options for increased cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and overall fitness. While some may enjoy the high-intensity cardio workout that running offers, some may prefer the muscle-building and joint benefits of cycling. If you don’t have a preference, changing up your activity and alternating between the two could provide the best option for a well-rounded, engaging spring sports routine!
